According to United States Justice Department in 1985, while psychiatrist made up 8% of physicians, they accounted for more than 18% of the physicians suspended from US Government Health Insurance programs for fraud. This was the worse performance of any specialty group within the medical field. The situation has not improved.
Psychiatrist E. Fuller Torrey, author of “Nowhere to Go” declared that psychiatrists have rarely presented anyone’s interest but their own. The organizations are nothing more, nor less, than professional unions and function primarily to serve their members economic interest.
In 1994 Aetna Insurance Company filed a lawsuit charging patient fraud. Steven Arterburn and his “New Life Treatment” centers and the Dr. Fred Grosse, Christian Therapy program were among the defendants. The suit alleged illegal methods by a group of psychiatric hospitals to put “heads into beds” and to milk patient's insurance benefits and thereby pick the pockets of insurers such as Aetna. The suit alleges that perspective patients were urged to call an 800 number toll free advertising in magazines, such as Charisma and Ministers Today.
The ad promised christian based assistance with personal problems such as being overweight or suffering with depression. Callers were reportedly not informed that they were applying to a psychiatric hospital rather than a religiously oriented facility. Aetna claims it was fraudulently billed with inflated insurance billings for the ensuing drug therapy and other treatments that were delivered---or even not delivered--- There are no isolated incidents. It is not limited to just a few denominations but pervaded all mainstream religious practices in the western world!
