The danger is that these Psychologies may, to one degree or another, replace christianity without most people even noticing that any substitution has taken place! The crisis was summarized in a May 1994 article in “Christianity Today.” In some instances the influence of the therapies---even from within the church---may be so strong that our character and relationship are no longer christian but are now family systemic or Jungian (slang for hobo) Our love may be empathy.
In short, the language we assimilate and the disciplines to which we submit may make our souls therapeutic rather than christian. Psychology and psychiatry appallingly tarnished image has rubbed off. It is an image to which religion would do well to rid itself. The risks and danger of referring parishioners to psychologists and psychiatrists become blatantly obvious when one inspects the consistent criminal acts within their ranks.
In 1995 Milwaukie, Wisconsin’s Psychiatrist Vincent Giannattasio had his license permanently revoked for having had sex with 3 female patients, including a nun, over a 6 year period. Giannattasio had a contract with the nun’s “Religious Order” to perform counseling. He was indicted in 1991 for fraudulent claims to medical health insurance but criminal charges were dropped.
The government submitted the case with a civil action charging him with 92 counts of medical fraud. On December 22,1995 Giannattasio was ordered to pay a civil penalty of $35,000 to the US Government. His back ground deserves mentioned. He testified in a 1971 case to support the value of topless dancing and stated: “It turns on the imagination! It has redeeming social value. Most normal American males are visually oriented.”
