While the above is a very simplified excerpt of Marx's views on the subject, it reflects the nature of the burgeoning anti-religious belief systems. In order to gain complete control over the national psyche, the "authorities" must must lure or tear the citizenry away from their religious faith. Loyalty to the nation state, spirituality, and religion are usually not compatible. Totalitarian regimes must have total domination over mind, spirit and body in order to achieve their goal of absolute oppression.
