The advent of the National Institution of Mental Health (NIMH) funded the church mental health care in the 60s and 70s. This automatically led to the increased use of the clergy as a community resource for psychiatry. In conjunction with this program the role of the church further shifted to providing parishioners with mental health education and early detection of “supposed” mental illness. 

During this same period the merging of two groups helped to integrate psychiatry and religion further. The Academy of Religion and Mental Health and the American Foundation of Religion and Psychiatry. (Now called the Institute of Religion and Health) (IRH) Together they both supported the Institute of Mental Health sponsored grant which provided seed money for ten pastoral counseling centers, three of which opened in Georgia, Florida, and Massachusetts. 

In the late 70s psychiatrists Paul Meiner and Frank Minuth founded a ground breaking christian psychiatric clinic which later became known as the chain of Menier clinics. By 1992 the chain had grown to 25 facilities with over 300 staff. The chain later merged with New Life Treatment Centers in 16 States with 53 outlets! In essence, the clergy and churches had become unwittingly feeder lines for psychiatry and psychology. 

Congregations which had previously turned to God in times of need were diagnosed as mentally ill and given psychiatric rather than spiritual assistance. Paul Pruyser from the Menninger Foundation remarked: “Referrals for psychiatric evaluation and treatment are being made with increasing frequency from the ranks of the clergy and the religious. The american Journal of Psychiatry reported in 1986: “During the 60s and 70s the Community Mental Health Centers (CMHC) movement fostered the use of the clergy as a community resource. 

At least two studies confirmed that clergy receiving mental health training became more committed to delivering therapeutic service and less committed to their religious Responsibilities.
