Photo Nancy Pelosi and Syrian President  Assad, 2007: Pelosi traveled to Syria where she sat down with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad to discuss the Iraq war. Assad’s government was, at the time, actively supporting the insurgency in Iraq, funneling foreign fighters and equipment into the “Sunni Triangle” with the purpose of killing American men and women. “We came in friendship, hope, and determined that the road to Damascus is a road to peace,” she told reporters as she toured the now war-torn streets of Damascus.
