When Obama was running for the White House
in 2008 he boldly stated he would cut “wasteful” missile defense research and development, refuse to put weapons in space, “slow development of future combat weapons systems,” work to eradicate all nuclear weapons by halting U.S. development of new systems and proposing a global ban on all fissile material, and “negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.”
After these grand proclamations, we saw the release of butterflies and blue birds, and a rose in every gun barrel.
Everyone wants peace except those hell bent on conquest. The disagreement is about how to get there.
ObamaWorld calculates according to errant assumptions: if evil America will only disarm, then friendly Russia will be even friendlier. If evil America cuts weapons developments and retreats, peaceful Islam will become more peaceful. If evil America takes missile systems off rapid alert, thus removing all deterrent to attack, nobody will attack. Look! Blue birds, and roses!
ReaganWorld proposed pragmatism instead of blue birds. Calling the Soviets what they are, agents of conquest with evil intent, Reagan proposed a policy designed to drastically reduce weapons and conflict. That policy insisted we “trust but verify.” It proclaimed “peace through strength.” Reagan negotiated accordingly and the results: weapons reductions, the end of the Cold War, a halt to Soviet global ambitions, the liberation of tens of millions of people from behind the Iron Curtain, and the fall of the
Evil Empire, without a shot being fired.
Putin is working feverishly to restore the Soviet Union. He sees a clear opportunity with another Carter in the White House. And why not? There is no one to stop him from increasing Soviet influence. Consequently he promotes assaults on various fronts:
supporting terrorism through Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and Syria, assisting Venezuela and others in South America to our disadvantage, attempting to control energy resources in the Middle East, and positioning to control energy supplies to Europe as well.
As he promised, Obama is now ‘more flexible’ given his re-election, and so the push is on to solve the problem of evil America.

In an attempt to seize total control over national security and bypass congress, a frightening new step by the Obama Administration is coming into play. As noted in Friday’s Wall Street Journal in an op-ed by John Bolton and John Woo, a State Department advisory group that is run by former Secretary of Defense William Perry is advising that the U.S. and Russia both reduce nuclear weapons without a treaty, as a treaty would require ratification by Congress. This would allow Obama and his executive branch to unilaterally cut our nuclear weaponry and ignore the treaty clause of the Constitution.
