Conservatives Don’t Need a ‘Republican Barack Obama’
Sen. Ben Sasse issued some tough love today at the Conservative Policy Summit in Washington, D.C.: Electing a Republican president, he said, won’t solve America’s problems.
“The idea that a ‘strong man’ can save us isn’t true,” Sasse, R-Neb., said. “What America needs is a constitutional recovery, not a Republican Barack Obama.”

Conservatism is Ready and Awaiting Your Attention
I was listening to Rush Limbaugh on June 21, 2011 and he described me like he had known me all my life, like he was looking into my mind. He was talking about how the media, and politicians in both parties, say that 40% of the voting population is partisan, hard core Republican, and 40% is partisan, hard core Democrat. They assume that 80% of the population is going to vote party line, regardless of the results. Independent voters, 20% of the population, are the key they say. Keep these 40%-40%-20% numbers in mind. Rush made the observation that these same pundits and politicians consider Independents lacking enough intelligence or knowledge to understand policy, or the Constitution for that matter. The 20% can’t make up their minds or don’t know what they want. They are the Sarah Palin dummies to them (not criticizing Palin here). For that reason both parties deluge us with talking points, evasions, very vague “pledges”, big spending made to look like budget cutting, grand promises, and outright lies. The old political saying goes “if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with B S”. I don’t baffle as easy as I used to.

This election cycle is crowded with clones of years past, espousing this and proclaiming that with no real substance to ensure what is said can actually be realized. I guess that’s why they call it a cycle, it always returns and it’s always the same.
We have Jeb, another Bush, which in itself would be unprecedented but another Bush? There are 33 declared candidates, some we know but most we don’t. The ones we don’t know really don’t have much of a chance and have thrown there “hats” into the ring for some other reasons than seriously running for President. They may think they can win but it’s very much like some of the contestants on American Idol who are put on the stage for our entertainment and not their ability to sing.

Marco Rubio told Sean Hannity yesterday that he had wanted border security before amnesty, but now thinks we need amnesty first so, in paying the government for their amnesty, we can use the illegal aliens’ to pay for securing the border. After all, the border will take several years to secure, so we should encourage people to cross the border illegally and forge documents to prove they’ve met the deadline. Then they can pay the feds to secure the border in even higher numbers. Or something like that.
Senate Republicans Willfully and Knowingly Lie to Their Constituents
Last night, having noted the list of Republicans in the Senate who voted to fund Obamacare in yesterday’s Morning Briefing, I went through a series of emails from readers.
Readers from Texas, Kentucky, Utah, South Dakota, and Georgia all had the same story. They’d called the offices of Senators Chambliss, Cornyn, Hatch, Thune, McConnell, and Isakson to object to those senators funding Obamacare. They were all told by these Senate offices that these Senators had voted to defund Obamacare or, in the case of Senator Cornyn’s office, that there had been no vote on defunding Obamacare.
These Senators and their staffs are lying. They voted to fund Obamacare. More troubling, they know they did it.
Yesterday, on the floor of the Senate, Mitch McConnell again said, “Obamacare is a colossal mistake for our country. . . . We need to start all over. This bill needs to be repealed and it needs to be replaced. . . . And anyone who thinks we’ve given up this fight is dead wrong.”
It’s similar to what he said at CPAC. I am sure he will keep on saying it.
But, Senator McConnell and a sizable portion of the Republican Conference voted to fund Obamacare and now they are lying about doing so.
Here’s how they are doing it.
The continuing resolution they voted for funds Obamacare.
Senator Ted Cruz offered an amendment to defund Obamacare. All of the Republicans in the Senate voted for that amendment, but that amendment failed.
So that gets us back to the continuing resolution, which funds Obamacare. Senator McConnell voted for it. By voting for the continuing resolution he was voting to fund Obamacare. Same with these others. In fact, a majority of the Republican Senate Conference voted against the continuing resolution in part because it funds Obamacare. But the following Senators voted to pass the continuing resolution even though it still funds Obamacare.

Many of these same Senators are also supporting separate legislation to foist a massive tax increase on the American people.

Maybe Republicans should try being popular
Republicans don’t control the U.S. Senate and they don’t have the presidency. Instead of wasting time and energy in doomed efforts to defeat President Obama’s Cabinet nominees or sucking up to illegal aliens, why not focus on issues where Republicans can be off-the-charts popular while forcing Democrats into taking stupid positions?
After the slaughters at Virginia Tech, Aurora, Colo., Tucson, Ariz., and Newtown, Conn., every sentient person knows we need to do something about institutionalizing the mentally ill and — at the very least — keeping guns out of their hands.
That happens to be impossible right now. Involuntary commitments even for the severely psychotic went the way of vagrancy laws. Although federal law technically requires background checks to include records of mental illness, the states and mental health industry refuse to provide that information. Cont. Reading
