The Association seeks to benefit the teaching profession and American children and to improve the education of all American people. It conducts research on school problems, teachers’ welfare, and works for improvement of curriculum and instruction. The organization works with educational groups in other parts of the world. It helped form the World Organization of Teacher’s Federation (WOTF) in 1946.
By 1961 this Association had over 613,000 members. Back in 1857 ... 43 leaders from State Teachers Association organized the National Teachers association in Philadelphia. In 1870 this organization merged with the National Association of School superintendents and the American normal school associations to form the National Education Association.

In 1922 the association activities were broadened to include research and study of numerous problems. The headquarters was permanently established in Washington DC in 1919 and by 1957 the Association moved to a new five million dollar headquarter building at 1201, 16th Street, N.W., Washington 6, DC.
