Our Land: Our People: Webster’s History Text 1939:
In these later years (1939) thousands of people beyond the school age have seen the advantage of more schooling. Hundreds of evening schools have been opened to aid in carrying on adult education. Courses to meet any need may be found in these schools. Many private and public schools after the 1900’s offer student’s courses by mail. Earnest students, even though they may hold positions requiring steady effort during the day, have often profited greatly from such studies.
In recent years the federal government has provided aid for certain types of education. In 1917 the Smith/Hughes Act was passed to permit congress to appropriate funds to help pay teachers of agriculture and home economics. The purpose of the federal aid was to improve the training of the boys and girls in rural districts that they may become more efficient farmers and homemakers.
In our own times (1939) the federal government provides money for the assistance of high school and college students. During the years of depression many young people in our country were without the means of continuing in school. The National Youth Administration was organized in 1935. Funds were set aside under this plan to provide paid employment for college and high school students while attending school.
