Bite #13,One Room School Houses:
Our Land: Our People: Webster 1939
If your grandparents or great grandparents were in the country when they were children the chances are they attended school 5 or 6 months a year. they probably went to an old one room school house beside an old country road. Perhaps it was three or four miles from where many of them lived. They carried their noon day meals to school and ate around a big stove in the middle of the school room when the weather was cold or under the shade of the trees when the weather was warm.
When their grandparents visited their school they must have noticed improvements over the schools they had attended. The lights would have been better and the big stove would have been an improvement over the old fireplace of their day. There were many more books and they were much more interesting than those of earlier times.
It is likely that the teachers spent more time with the lessons and less with the rod than in the earlier schools.
BY 1937 THE OLDER BOYS AND GIRLS WOULD BE STUDYING PSYCHOLOGY AND CIVIL GOVERNMENT WHICH ARE NEW STUDIES NOT ADDED IN EARLIER DAYS, WHILE IN THE EARLIER DAYS MORE STUDY WAS GIVEN TO GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY!
