In 1921 you could write to the Bureau of Education in Washington DC and get a government pamphlet entitled, “Money Values of Education” that told you many interesting facts. The free Public Schools of America have trained thousands of boys and girls who would otherwise have had little or no opportunity to get ahead in the world. In view of these facts we can see how important it is that the value of education is not left to individuals, either adults or children, to decide. 



You should understand why the laws in every state compel boys and girls to attend school. One of the problems of the Bureau of Education is to keep children in school long enough to get the education that is so essential. The difficulty is sometimes due to the failure, or pupils, or both, to understand how valuable an education really is. In many states children are not allowed to go to work until they are 16 years of age unless they have completed the first 6 grades of elementary school. Even then they are required by law to attend continuative schools until they reach a certain age. That is, they must leave their work for half days each week and attend special classes provided for their instruction.

Compulsory Education laws give every boy and girl a chance to go to school. This is because many parents and children are not wise enough to see the real values of an education. It is necessary for a free society to protect itself and its citizens as well as all boys and girls by passing these laws.
