Everyday Civics: American Public School Book:Bite #1. Harvard University 1635:
In 1635 provisions were made for the establishment of a public school in Boston. This laid the foundation of the public school system in the United States. No country in Europe had ever done this before. slogan by Emerson: “AMERICA is another word for OPPORTUNITY!” It is said that this is the first legislative assembly in which the people, through the representatives, ever gave their own money to fund a place for education.
Two years later the Reverend John Harvard at Charleston left his library of 320 volumes and half of his estate equivalent to 150 pounds to this college. The General Court, out of gratitude, ordered the new institution...the First English College of America... to be called Harvard by John Harvard’s name. such was the origin of Harvard University. The interest felt for the college was so great that in the year 1645 every family throughout New England gave either a peck of corn or twelve pence in money toward its support. The people were poor but they were determined that learning should not be buried in the graves of their fathers.
