After about the year 1880 the schools rapidly improved. High Schools began to appear even in the smaller towns. Courses in manual training, cooking, sewing, and agriculture, were soon to be found in many of these schools. Some of these courses were offered in Elementary Schools as well as in High Schools. School libraries and play ground equipments were provided; music organizations for pupils, particularly in High Schools.
Debating and athletic teams representing the schools in competition with other schools helped to make school life far more varied and interesting than college life had been just a few short years before. School attendance became far better than it had ever been. High school attendance grew at an amazing rate. In many cities Junior High Schools came into existence. Junior Colleges have been created by local school boards, making it possible for the graduates from High Schools to gain two years of college education in their home communities. In the country districts, in many places, consolidated schools have been built to take the place of small and poorly equipped one room school houses.
