Trump lets Mattis do what he wants to ISIS, obliterating the caliphate

It is undeniable that ISIS has retreated from Iraq and Syria. The once fearsome jihadi outfit has been decimated by the Trump administration. The answer for this change is simple.

Since becoming president, Donald Trump has reportedly left the fight against ISIS in the capable hands of General (Ret.) James Mattis, the current Secretary of Defense. “Mad Dog” Mattis has pursued an offensive strategy against the terror group that has led to its demise on the battlefields of Syria and Iraq.

This development would not have been possible without President Trump’s decision to scrap Obama-era rules of engagement, which dictate how U.S. forces can conduct operations on the ground. Brig. Gen. Andrew Croft, the ranking U.S. Air Force officer in Iraq, told Fox News:

The leadership team that is in place right now has certainly enabled us to succeed. I couldn’t ask for a better leadership team to work for, to enable the military to do what it does best.

Destruction of the Caliphate
Beginning in 2016, U.S.-backed Syrian forces forced ISIS out of its capital in the city of Raqqa. Around the same time, U.S.- and Iranian-backed forces in Iraq dislodged ISIS from the city of Mosul, the second most important nerve center in its caliphate.

This weekend, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared the end of Iraq’s war against ISIS. Since storming across the Iraqi border in 2014, ISIS has been successfully pushed out of Iraq by the Iraqi Army, the Kurdish Peshmerga, Iranian-backed militias, and Coalition troops.

To the north in Syria, Russia, the main supporter of President Bashar al-Assad, has publicly stated that Syria has been “liberated” from ISIS. Thanks to several Syrian-Russian offensives, the jihadi army no longer controls any cities and is mostly confined to the unforgiving deserts of southeastern Syria.

Threat Remains
Despite their battlefield losses, ISIS still poses a threat to the West. Over the summer, it was reported that ISIS is attempting to regroup in Libya, where a civil war continues to rage between dueling governments.

For Europe, an ISIS-infested Libya is especially dangerous since most migrants arrive in Europe from Libyan ports.

Sub-Saharan Africa has also proven to be a possible new home for ISIS fighters, with ongoing Islamist insurgencies in Somalia, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, and Kenya.

Afghanistan and the Russian state of Dagestan also remain fertile ground for jihadi violence.

The Trump administration has also warned that ISIS could regroup and reform as a conventional terrorist organization focused on conducting asymmetrical attacks in Europe and North America. Previous attacks in Paris, New York, Ottawa, and San Bernardino prove that ISIS terrorists and sympathizers are capable of wreaking havoc with just a few rifles, homemade bombs, and trucks.

President Trump was right to let Mattis take the fight to ISIS, but it’s not the time to let our guard down yet.

During a just concluded tour of Pakistan, Egypt, Kuwait, and Jordan, the Defense secretary sounded much more like the country's chief diplomat than its top soldier.
