From Communism to Christ!

Some time in the 90’s, I, Pearl Sturgis, attended a little church in Airville, Pennsylvania. I met this guy named Richard John Kahler. During our controversy with the church over the newer Bible translations we left the church and started our private Bible Study group in our homes. There were only 5 of us but we had strong convictions that we would not use the newer translations as we were very much attached to our old family Bibles of the Authorized King James Version of 1611.
This happened around the same time that I discovered the truth about the Protestant Reformers and how in God’s Providence christians were led to America as they fled from religious persecution. The very reason they came to the new world was for freedom of worship.
They pursued the God given right to worship the Lord under the dictates of their own conscience. It was not to worship just any god but to worship the One and Only God and Savior who died for the whole world and to proclaim liberty for all the inhabitants thereof, as the Lord commanded in Leviticus 25:10 which is engraved on our Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to this day (June 2017).
During our Bible Study Richard (Dick) Kahler gave all 5 of us a copy of his testimony which he had typed by hand and never published. I am so ashamed to say that I stuck this little 18 page booklet away in my book shelf and never read it until today, June 9,2017. There was so much going on at that time (1990’s) as we were building our house and starting our own Landscaping business. Eventually the little Bible Study group broke up and we moved to different churches.
I heard Dick had died and I was invited to the service. I regret deeply that I did not attend. I never knew much about Dick until today after reading his remarkable testimony. I remember him telling the stories of how he was suppose to kill and bury the victims and instead he hid them. For some odd reason I didn’t have sense enough to pay attention back then. Bite#6,A Thousand shall fall at thy Side:

While in the First Regiment of Transport we were stationed near a monastery where the Kings and Royalty of Spain were buried near the town of El Escorial. This was to be one of the wonders of the world. We were escorted through this beautiful building by guards and shown the different tombs of the kings, the treasure room, and the crown jewels, etc., which were inside and behind great bars so that no one could possibly get to them.
The ceilings were round and came down about one fourth of the size of the walls. These were all carved in and inlaid with gold. The reason we selected this place for our regiment was because both sides had promised not to bomb this monastery. The Pope also warned them about destroying this building. One night about 8 o clock an officer squad car pulled in in a cloud of dust. An officer jumped out and asked to speak with our commander.
He said there were ambulances up the road about 5 miles filled with wounded men and no drivers. The enemy aircraft was pounding that road with bombs and machine gun fire. Our commander asked us if anyone wanted to volunteer to go and bring those ambulances back. About 5 of us volunteered to go. One of them was a good Buddy of mine named Harry Saks. Harry was not a christian, which none of them were, but a real nice guy. Harry told me to stick close to him and we would work as a team.
We got up to a place in the road where there were big signs telling us in different languages that the enemy was near. Just beyond you could see barbed wire entanglement strung across the road. We stopped and got out and looked all around but we could not find any stranded ambulances. The planes came over wave after wave and bombed the road. It was moonlight and you could almost read a newspaper it was so light. I heard a bomb coming down and Harry yelled, “Over Here” I was about to follow him when someone yelled, “Down here in the ditch Buddy!”
Before I reached the ditch the bomb exploded on the other side of the road where Harry was. There was a white farm house and a pond of water that looked like a mirror in the moonlight. I heard three people talking and saying, “I wonder who he was?” I saw Harry lying on the road. I do not know what happened for about a day but the men with me said I stood over Harry’s body and returned the machine gun fire with my pistol. They knew something was wrong with me and they didn’t see how I got through that alive. I am since reminded of God’s Word: “A Thousand shall fall at thy side.” Psalm 91:7.
