#14 World Federation for Mental Health Emerges:

In 1929 Rev. Canon T.W. Pym of the Church of England and chaplain for the King spoke before the Conference on Mental Health in London praising the Tavistock Clinic which helped organize the Conference. Deputy Director of Tavistock at that time was John Rawlings Rees, who later co-founded the World Federation for Mental Health. 

Tavistock Clinic was part of Britain’s Psychological Warfare Department and later provided training groups for studying “interpersonal relations” and group behavior. The main strategy of the Tavistock’s psychiatrists was to expand their activities beyond that of “caretakers” for the insane for “caretakers” of the general public by establishing preventive and social work programs. 

For this goal they needed an alliance with respectability with the pillars of society-- churches--- to improve their reputation. Canon Pym was candid about this, claiming that ministers of the Church of England too often share the opinions of the general public, that psychology is a side line suitable for cranks alone! Dispensing with this image he asserted it opens one's eyes to the immense possibilities of research in the field of mental health.
