Pastor John Dekker” (highlights submitted by Pearl L. Sturgis) In the mid 70s our kids were attending high school in South Eastern School District, York County, Pennsylvania.
We rented an old farmhouse that had an old wood stove. This particular evening the fire was so cozy and the kids were outside hanging out with their friends. I was thinking about the radio program I heard for the first time that morning. The program was from out of Baltimore and titled “In Defense of Truth” with Pastor John Dekker. he was talking about a grassroots group named “Eagle Forum” with Phyllis Schlafly.
I was shocked at the things he was saying. He was talking about a book of Phyllis Schlafly’s, “Child Abuse in the Classroom” to educate parents about what their children are being taught in public schools. At first I shrugged it off thinking he wanted to sell the book so he warns about another book “Bless the Beasts and the Children” taught in English Class in public schools.
He warns about the bad words in the book and how the book encourages children who want to be free to do their own thing to unite with others and form a gang and leave home together. That evening it was nagging my brain. What if it’s true???? I looked down on the dining room table where the kids had left their school books and there it was!
“BLESS THE BEASTS AND THE CHILDREN!” --- Just as I opened the stove door with the book clutched in my hand my 13 year old entered the room and saw me. “No! You can’t burn my English Book! I will get in trouble.” I closed the stove door and didn’t burn the book. I placed it back on the table with the other school books. My daughter begged me not to complain to the school board as she would be embarrassed. I respected her wishes but I contacted Representative Snyder and after that happened I watched closely and got involved in their homework and questioned them about their lessons.
