This week and last we learned from Democrats that Obamacare is society's latest liberating influence. Americans can stop and smell the roses now that they are unshackled from the adult responsibility of providing for their own basic necessities. The need to perform honest yet unpleasant or even difficult work is a thing of the past. Free at last!
However, those of us who work for a living are feeling a lot less liberated now that we must subsidize the sabbaticals of those who vote for a living.
In 1858, other Democrats were living a "liberated" life at least somewhat similar to their moral and intellectual descendants of today, who tout the ideal of a good life with little or no work, supported by the involuntary exertions of others. Slaveholders, subsidized by the sweat of slaves, were free from the need to perform unpleasant, menial, and strenuous work. They justified their theft with moral preening and claims of their moral and intellectual superiority (just as do their spiritual heirs today).
Of course, the real purpose of slavery was power and the right of one group to steal from another (again, just as today). So in that same year, Abraham Lincoln described this system of slave and slaveholder. "It is the eternal struggle between these two principles -- right and wrong -- throughout the world . . . It is the same principle in whatever shape it develops itself. It is the same spirit that says, 'You work and toil and earn bread, and I'll eat it.' "
If Lincoln were here today, he might say "You work and toil and earn heath care, and I'll use it." Not coincidentally, Lincoln would be talking about the same political party that supported slavery and fought a war to preserve it in 1861 - the Democrats.
In 2009 Democrats sold Obamacare as a great charitable crusade, which purportedly helped those who couldn't help themselves. Last week, the Democrats changed their story, and enthusiastically announced Obamacare's power to swell the ranks of those who couldn't help themselves with those who wouldn't help themselves. And in a convulsion of Orwellian hypocrisy, Democrats claimed these lazy wretches will not be sinking their own spirits beneath a deepening helplessness and dependency, they are instead being "liberated." Which is it? Were the Democrats lying in 2009 or are they lying now? The answer is: yes.
Obviously, they are lying now because unemployment and dependency is not freedom. And they were lying in 2009 because Obamacare is not charity. Charity is an exercise of God's gift of free will. Some people will donate to a good cause cheerfully and voluntarily, while others (very often liberal Democrats) won't. Charity can't be asked or offered when the agents of the beneficiaries are holding a gun to the heads of the "donors." Gifts and acts of kindness to those less fortunate must be voluntary on the giver's side, and received with gratitude on the part of the recipient. No responsible and reputable philanthropist slakes his charitable impulses by insulting and embezzling from his employers for the money to buy favors from the poor he pretends to help. And no worthy and deserving recipient of charity demands it be paid him by others as his "human right."
Further, no responsible and reputable therapist treats his patients by deepening their dependency on him. Such people cannot be called charitable. Other names come to mind. "Democrat politician" is one. "Evil" is another. An evil person must have victims, so he creates victims by cultivating their dependency on him. This pattern is one of the symptoms of human evil, according to Dr. M. Scott Peck in his book, People of the Lie. For a moment, consider the spectacle of the Democrats' lying proclamations next to Peck's description of the face of human evil, "A life of ease is yours, but only if you vote for us!"
Dr. Peck also sheds light on the Democrats' over-controlling ambition to extort, coerce, and bully citizens into charitable acts. He relays a Mormon myth "in which Christ and Satan were each required to present God with his own plan for dealing with the infant human race. Satan's plan was simple . . . God had armies of angels at His command; just assign an angel with punitive power to each human, and He would have no trouble keeping them in line. Christ's plan was radically different and more imaginative. . . 'Let them have free will and go their own way . . . but allow me to live and die as one of them, both as an example of how to live and of how much You care for them.' "*
Today, as always, you have a choice between Lincoln's right and wrong, between God's good and evil.
So whose side are you on?
