BY CULTURAL LIMITS
Cold enough for ya?
I don’t know if the rest of the country heard, but out here in flyover country – where hundreds of flights have been cancelled – we got socked with Snowmageddon yesterday.
Digging out is taking longer than normal.
To make matters worse, an “Arctic Vortex” is upon us pushing the high temperatures to somewhere around zero degrees Fahrenheit. For a part of the world that is long accustomed to 100+ degrees during the summer, this is a shock to the system.
To put it mildly, being outside at this time is dangerous, which is why no kids were sledding down the hill of my childhood this afternoon. Responsible parents know that it is too cold to let the kids outside to play.
Responsible school administrators who most likely did not want to get sued into oblivion, closed every last school in town. EVERYTHING from pre-schools to the universities was closed.
Major Fortune 500 companies with sprawling campuses were closed. (Yes, Monsanto took a day off from wrecking the nation’s food supply due to inclement weather.)
All the major outdoor cultural attractions which NEVER close (and I mean never) called only for essential staff. With all luck the zoo keepers let the penguins out to play, although that exhibit is closed for improvements right now. (If it’s cold enough in the winter, they let the penguins outside, especially to play in the snow, and the penguins love it.)
All municipal governments and the county government were closed. All of them other than the snow plows.
So were the food pantries that provide food for the poor and those in need.
BUT since the retailers in the industry where CL works were open, so were we.
And all day long, the staff walked around the office saying, “Why are we here?” The trucks wouldn’t start, the big boss sent one of the drivers to pick up two people who’s cars got stuck in the snow, nothing was open for pick-ups to be made, no clients came to pick up product – but we were open!
For what, so the staff could trade stories on how our pets couldn’t get down the back steps to relieve themselves? Try to figure out when the last time we saw a snow plow on the block? Commiserate over allys not being plowed by the city? Compare how long it took to dig the car out of the parking spot on the street?
Oh, no, to feed the boss’s…well, whatever it is that drives people who live by the mentality “if the industry is open, so are we.”
And, no we can’t work at home because the server is not online and one key person doesn’t have a home computer (and refuses to consider purchasing one). To do work, one has to be in the office, doncha know.
Life in America living with liberal nitwit dinosaurs as decision makers.
Dammit, don’t we deserve a snow day?
A number of schools have already cancelled for tomorrow, It’s a mess out here.
Oh, and Mr. Al Gore, here’s your inconvenient truth - it’s effing cold!
