About that "civil
war" between the Republican establishment in Washington and conservative
insurgents...could it be a good thing? A really good thing?
No doubt you've
heard the saying, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." It's an adage
traced back to the writings of the 19th century German philosopher Friedrich
Nietzsche, whose original quotation was, "That which does not kill us makes us
stronger."
So, about that
intra-party civil war that so many on the right and left are talking about,
particularly as it relates to the federal budget proposal now before the Senate.
You're likely aware of House Speaker John Boehner's broadside against
conservative criticism of the so-called bi-partisan compromise.
Boehner lashed
out, repeatedly, at Tea Party activists, saying they've lost credibility,
calling them/us ridiculous for opposing the budget deal, dismissing conservative
critics as a bunch of self-serving hard-liners with an unserious approach
to governing.
A number of
moderate or centrist GOP establishment types have echoed the Speaker's
knife-edged sentiments. And of course many on the Left have been equally
pleased, if not downright giddy, over the public display of party disunity -
what some characterized as the takedown of the anti-government agitators.
Really?
Remember, that
which does not kill us makes us stronger. And neither General Boehner's
criticism, nor that from any of his lieutenants, has delivered a kill shot,
certainly. So, why not welcome the Speaker's targeting, his explosive animosity,
his open invitation to get it on? Why not answer his vitriolic volley with
another popular saying, "Bring it"?
Go ahead, paint
that target on Tea Party patriots. Let the country know that we're a sharp thorn
in your side, that we're uncomfortably under your skin. That we matter, that
we're strong enough and powerful enough to warrant your sarcasm and
ridicule.
What does
Boehner's open exasperation accomplish? It doesn't send us scurrying off into a
dark corner with our tail between our legs. It inspires us to rise up, it helps
us unify, sound the call to battle, rally the troops, raise awareness, even
raise money to support the fight.
It will also
energize primary battles across the country next year, fueling anger and
determination to challenge the wobbly and weak-kneed. If conservative opposition
to those who put political fortune above principle, if that opposition weren't
making a difference, the establishment reaction would be to show indifference;
it wouldn't be to lambaste so publicly, it would be to discount, to ignore, to
just move on.
So, indeed, as
popular singer Kelly Clarkson reminds us in her hit, we shouldn't lose heart, we
should take heart, because…"What doesn't kill you makes you
stronger!"
