With the United States government able to simply ban the use or production of anything they find offensive or “bad for us”, we appear to be well on our way to becoming worse and more restricted than any communist country in history, save for the whole killing of millions of their own people.
Federal agencies like the EPA are shutting down whole energy industries, the IRS is targeting citizens, Homeland Security is procuring tanks and ammo while pushing gun confiscation, The NSA is recording our every word and keystroke.
These departments are acting as their own little thiefdoms and it seems we citizens can do nothing about it.
Now it’s been announced the FDA will be banning the use of trans fats. Gee, what’s wrong with that? It’s for our own good, is it not? They’re simply looking after the health of us stupid citizens that don’t have the sense to come in out of the rain unless told to. Trans fats are bad and should banned, right?
Well, no for two important reasons. First, how dare the government tell us what we can and cannot eat, drink, etc. Second; with all the conflicting science, why should we even believe anyone who claims that trans fats, or anything consumed in moderation is bad for us?
On Friday CNN reported that artificial trans fat in foods may eventually become a thing of the past.
The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday took a first step toward potentially eliminating most trans fat from the food supply, saying it has made a preliminary determination that a major source of trans fats — partially hydrogenated oils — is no longer “generally recognized as safe.”
If the preliminary determination is finalized, according to the FDA, then partially hydrogenated oils will become food additives that could not be used in food without approval. Foods with unapproved additives cannot legally be sold.
What this is, is about control, plain and the latest fad of junk science. Want proof? Let’s just look at some of the things we’ve been scared, over the last few decades, into going without because they are “bad” for us.
Coconut Oil will kill us:
Coconut oil is mostly saturated fat, and that’s why it’s gotten a bad rap. But recently, saturated fats have been getting a second look . Coconut oil contains lauric acid and stearic acid (also found in dark chocolate), and these seem to behave differently in the body; early research suggests it doesn’t raise heart disease risk. Yet for the longest time it was “settled science” that coconut oil was just BAD!
Salt will kill us:
In 1972, when the National Institutes of Health introduced the National High Blood Pressure Education Program to help prevent hypertension, no meaningful experiments had yet been done. The best evidence on the connection between salt and hypertension came from two pieces of research. One was the observation that populations that ate little salt had virtually no hypertension. But those populations didn’t eat a lot of things — sugar, for instance — and any one of those could have been the causal factor. The second was a strain of “salt-sensitive” rats that reliably developed hypertension on a high-salt diet. The catch was that “high salt” to these rats was 60 times more than what the average American consumes.
Although researchers quietly acknowledged that the data were “inconclusive and contradictory” or “inconsistent and contradictory” — because of two quotes from the cardiologist Jeremiah Stamler, a leading proponent of the eat-less-salt campaign, in 1967 and 1981 — the link between salt and blood pressure was upgraded from hypothesis to fact. In other words – Junk Science.
In fact, the evidence from studies published over the past two years actually suggests that restricting how much salt we eat can increase our likelihood of dying prematurely. Put simply, the possibility has been raised that if we were to eat as little salt as the U.S.D.A. and the C.D.C. recommend, we’d be harming rather than helping ourselves.
Processed and Unprocessed Red Meat will kill us:
It turns out processed meat has about the same amount of saturated fat as unprocessed red meat — and actually contains less cholesterol and iron. Maybe it’s other ingredients such as sodium? On average, processed meat has about 622 milligrams of sodium in about 2 ounces, while unprocessed meat has 155 milligrams. Researchers then hypothesized that it’s the salt’s effect on blood pressure, but that was just debunked.
I fact, a recent meta-analysis found zero relationship between saturated fat consumption and heart disease. So it’s neither the fat nor the salt in red meat that will kill us. Eat up!
Saturated Fats will kill us:
Saturated fats in foods like butter, cheese and red meat don’t cause heart disease and may be good for you, a British cardiologist says.
Decades of medical advice urging people to fight heart disease by cutting out fatty foods is wrong, says British cardiologist Dr. Aseem Malhotra, who has set out to “bust the myth of the role of saturated fat in heart disease.”
Fatty foods like butter and eggs have been “demonized” since the 1970s, but there is no scientific link showing they cause heart disease, he writes in the British Medical Journal.
Instead, they are actually good for you, and eating a high fat, low carbohydrate died has been show as the best way to lose weight, he says.
“Just to back up the evidence, Sweden only four days ago became the first western country to change their nutritional guidelines on the review of 16,000 studies saying that a low carbohydrate diet, one that is higher in fat, is actually healthier for weight loss and improving cholesterol profile. So this isn’t just anecdote, this isn’t opinion,” Dr. Malhotra told the BBC.
The moral of the story should be obvious. There is way more junk science being published than actual science. But our rulers would prefer the junk variety. There is no “control” in real science.
So again, eat up, while you still can.
