We live in an age of computers and not inquisitors. Surely there is a more humane and efficient method of collecting taxes than smashing car windows or attacking and looting tax paying citizens’ homes! wouldn’t certified letters to tax payers requesting a meeting be more reasonable than random searches and armed confrontation?
Wouldn’t a quick computer check to see if the taxpayer had properly filed and paid their taxes be much less expensive and time consuming than any investigation conducted as a result of a political letter to the editor???? Wouldn’t understanding and compassion have saved the IRS money and prestige in its dealings with the waitress and the janitor??? Wouldn’t a professional and honest application of the law elicit respect and confidence instead of fear for the smallest taxpayer from the highest public official???????
Wouldn’t straightforward answers instead of lies and cover ups better earn the trust of the taxpayer of conscientious IRS employees????? The abuses of the Internal Revenue Service have become so wide spread that there is scarcely a congressman whose office has not received constituent complaints. At a recent Ways and Means Subcommittee Hearing,. Congressman Dan Young (R Alaska) and John R. Rousselot (R CA) and former Senator Eugene McCarthy, testified as to specific IRS abuses in their personal experience.
The Senate also held 1980 oversight hearings on IRS excesses because of the public pressure regarding abuses. Republican, democrat, liberal, and conservative, the congress is visibly becoming agitated over the problems of this runaway Agency! Continued public pressure can bring needed corrective action but it has to be maintained and significantly intensified!
