Paul West:

Mr. Reagan’s years in office marked a turning point for America at home and abroad. His popularity was reflected in a landslide 1984 re-election that won him a record number of electoral votes and more popular votes than any other republican in history. Mr. Reagan was centrally responsible for a fundamental redirection of the national domestic priorities, concluded Fred I. Greenstein of Princeton University.

He was widely credited for restoring public confidence in the presidency after a long period of drift that included the Vietnam War, the Watergate Scandal, and the Iran Hostage Crisis. And yet, those who worked with him and aided his rise to power were struck by how little affected he seemed by the experience. During the years of the Reagan Presidency America laid to rest an era of division and self doubt. A largely self made man, Mr. Reagan was often underestimated.

He had no stronger supporters than the members of the armed forces and he merited their support. The Vietnam War and its aftermath had made many soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines feel like second class citizens. Almost single handedly, Reagan turned that around! He called the Vietnam War a noble cause, spoke often and loudly about his regard for the military, told service members to wear their uniforms proudly, and that he counted on them.

In the process he restored their pride and made them again feel like valued members of society. He had a deserved reputation for decisiveness but when a suicide bomber drove a truck into the marine barracks in Beirut, in October 1983, killing 24 servicemen, the highest one day casualty count since Iwo Jima....his response was----an air strike! In his speech at the National association of evangelicals in 1983 he stated: “I can not today call the Soviet Union an evil empire but a nuclear weapon freeze today would be a very dangerous fraud for that is merely an illusion of peace.
The reality is that we must find peace through strength.”
