Since the 1950s psychiatry has increasingly relied on the use of mind altering drugs to achieve behavioral control and modification. Today the use of such drugs, whether major tranquilizers to quiet the individual or psychotropic drugs to alter his perception, constitute the most used and abused form of psychiatric treatments. 

The chemical straight jacketing of our nation is more of a threat today than war. In the USA 134 million prescriptions for psychiatric drugs are written in a year. According to one study 83% of people referred to psychiatrists for treatment had undiagnosed physical ailments. The average junkie is likely to be a housewife on minor tranquilizers or anti anxiety pills. 

There are twice as many women than men among the millions of users. You can be addicted to them within 3 weeks and the withdrawal symptoms include psychosis. Doctors surveys in 1987 said that if they put a sign in their window “I do not prescribe valium” they would lose half their patients.
