The carefully cultivated image of the kindly psychiatrist nodding while his patient engages in verbal explorations on a couch is about as far from reality as drug induced hallucinations! 18 year old Janice, a parishioner of the Church of England, complained to her doctor of depression. She was torn by indecision of what career path to follow. the doctor casually said it was nerves and just as casually described antidepressants. Within hours of taking the drug she began to suffer blackouts.
When the doctor prescribed minor tranquilizers Janice became even more un-motivative and began to gain weight. She was then referred to a psychiatrist who diagnosed her as suffering from a depression. Weight reduction pills were prescribed to combat the gain caused by the tranquilizers. The combination of speed-like pills and tranquilizers catapulted her into a “high and low” that was diagnosed as manic-depression.
After many months she had become so desolate that she didn’t want to socialize. Paranoia was then diagnosed and the psychiatrist recommended “electro shock” treatments. Janice was then admitted to a local private Catholic hospital looking more like an old victorian home sedately nestled in plush green grounds. The quiet environment and walks around the sunlit gardens accompanied by several of the nuns was a calming influence. However, Janice spent a sleepless night before the treatment.
She became alarmed to hear the mother of four children adjacent to her weeping in terror at the prospect of receiving “electro shock.” Next morning she tried to tell the psychiatrist that she had changed her mind about taking the treatment. The doctor looked at the nun in attendance who placed a reassuring hand on Janice’s arm and said: “There, there child. The doctor is here to help you.”
Janice recalled afterwards how she was fearful about what was happening and something felt terribly wrong but the nun’s kind words and the thought that nuns do not lie made Janice nod her head in agreement. She woke several hours later to find two strangers standing over her bed. They told her they were her parents.
At that instant Janice knew she had been betrayed. She had been subjected to such violence by the doctor and nuns that through these treatments she had forgotten her own parents! For years afterwards she hated nuns and was turned off by religion. After ten sessions of the vicious abuse she could not even remember friends names or write properly.
She returned home and each day wondered why her life had turned out so bad. She finally realized the answer was psychiatry and the nuns were also victims. It took Janice five years before her faith in religion had returned and the hatred disappeared.
