The danger of the christian psychologists is that they may subtly replace christianity without most people even noticing that a substitution has taken place. The back lash includes malpractice suits leveled directly at religion with the cruelest of ironies. It is usually psychiatrists or psychologists that are used as the “expert witnesses” to testify against the defendants.
In April of 1979, Ken Nally, a 24 year old Talbot seminary student committed suicide. His parents filed a clergy malpractice suit alleging the pastors at Grace Community Church (GCC) in Los Angeles had prevented Nally from seeking professional counseling and had instead assisted him with Scripture. In 1985 Grace Church won the case. The evidence had revealed that Nally had been seen by no less than 8 professionals arranged through the church staff, including mental health professionals.
The church had never claimed to have had a counseling relationship with Nally except by arrangement and defended having referred to psychiatric and psychological practitioners previously. Escaping the notice of most observers however, was the fact that therapy received earlier had not worked and probably exacerbated the problem. meanwhile, the church relying on centuries old Scripture to assist the disturbing young man while not attempting to cure him, became the “whipping boy!”
Former psychotherapist Jeffrey Masson, in his book against, “Therapy Emotional Tyranny” and “The Myths of Psychological Healings” cautions: “Everybody should know that to step into the office of the psychotherapist, regardless of the latter persuasion, is to enter a world where great harm is possible!” Cardinal Joseph Bernardin was one of the most respected members of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy in the United States.
He had been a priest for 40 years and a bishop for 30 years and a cardinal for nearly 10 years when he suddenly found himself a target of the international press reports alleging he had sexually assaulted a 17 year old aspirant of priesthood. On what was this evidence based?????? Repressed memories that had been recovered during a therapy session involving hypnosis. As the case unfolded the plaintiff recanted his story. The memories had been fabricated and the therapist was to blame. The suit was dropped.
