We have a daughter Brooke, who is in the 9th grade. On February 15,1984 at Clackamas High School they showed movies in the (so called) Health Class! One was called. “The Right to Live: Who decides?” This movie showed actual actors playing out the lifeboat situation where the life boat had too many people on it and it is going to sink, therefore you have to throw some of the people over to save some of the people. So they go through the values.
They say this one is a doctor and this one is handicapped; This one is a youth and this one is a parent; this one is an attorney. they go through the values placing a value on each person. I totally object to that situation because everyone has tremendous value in our entire country. What seed they are planting here is that you are either more or less value because of your contribution to society.
Well, this is not what we believe in and I object to this type of teaching. The people in the movie were screaming as they were thrown out of the boat and killed. One might refer to this type of teaching as murder but it is happening in our public schools. When it is your school and your kid you will get directly involved! The whole situation was also in the Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program when our 4th grade daughter was in the program.
One was a house wife, one was a child and one was a teacher. They had the kids enact this thing. They had to decide which one to throw out and the one they decided to throw out first was the mother. It just rubbed me the wrong way that the mother would have the least value. Then there was a movie titled, “Parents, who needs them?” then the teacher wrote on the board:
What good are parents?...What will they do and are they important? Our daughter wrote yes they are important and they care but the movie showed parents and children fighting! They are planting negativity more and more in our children and I have a real problem with that. Larry Johnson.
