Bite #17, Reaffirming Religious Rights:
Citizens Commission for Human Rights:
People are reaffirming their religious rights and principles and their inherent spiritual nature. They have taken their first step toward reversing the wider decay. There are many things that can and must be done on a social level. A significant portion of religion’s misplaced reliance is on the “expertise” of psychology and psychiatry for the diagnosis and handling of emotionally distraught individuals.
Foremost, persons in such desperate circumstances must be provided proper and effective medical care and not the barbarism of drugs and shock therapy that is paraded as treatment. Sound medical attention; good nutrition; a healthy safe environment; activity that promotes confidence, and effective education will do far more for a troubled person than repeated drugging, shocks and other psychiatric atrocities.
Community Mental Health Centers (CMHC) should be rejected by our communities and the church be made the hub of activities as it once was. These centers should be turned over to the churches. Even psychiatry begrudgingly recognize that clergy has the capacity by religious background to provide assistance for emotional difficulties that mental health psychiatry alone could never deliver.
The effectiveness of clergymen of psychological counselors appears to depend much more on their capacity for understanding human behavior and on the warmth of their personalities than it does on their professional training or orientation. A recent study has found that regular church goers are less likely to suffer emotional difficulties. Another 1992 survey found church regulars healthier and less prone to drug and alcohol abuse.
