Bite #9, Fruits of the New Morality:
Citizens Commission for Human Rights:
In the United States the number of divorces annually have more than tripled since 1950. The marriage rate is at its lowest point in 30 years. The number of unmarried couples has skyrocketed to nearly 7 times what it was in 1970 and the number of births to unmarried girls age 15 to 19 years old increased by 310% between 1960 and 1991. The number of illegitimate births to girls under 15 years old increased by nearly 140% over the same period. More than 666,000 children were born out of wedlock in 1982.
This is 4 times as many as those born in 1950. Between 1970 and 1982 the number of one parent families headed by unmarried women rose by a startling 367%. The Black Community particularly has suffered. In July 1995 the Atlantic Monthly featured an article on the African Community in the United States, reporting that in 1991 we experienced the arrival of the mid teens in their first group, half of whom had been born to single mothers.
Criminal violence reached new peaks in Black Communities in 1990 and 1991. Of all the juveniles confined for violent offenses today, less than 30% grew up with both parents. In the year 2000 3/5 of black youth were born to single parents, many of whom were drug addicted. A congressman, John Lewis commented:
“The best city neighborhoods might well envy the peace and physical security of Harlem and other black ghettos of the 50’s.” This disastrous situation is mirrored internationally.
In Germany the number of unwed mothers rose to 422% from 1963 to 1994. United Kingdom’s divorce rate increased by 594% from 1957 to 1993 and children born out of wedlock increased by 345% from 1961 to 1994.
Reportedly, in Sweden, the number of children born out of wedlock in the year 1992 was 65% of total births.
