What has been the results of psychiatry and psychology’s intrusion into the religious realm? Paul Pruyser, Former Director of the Department of Education in the Menninger Foundation, a psychiatric interest group in the United States reported on the impact of the psychological disciplines in the training of the clergy. 

The word “soul” had lost its meaning and even its plausibility. Faith, hope and love can no longer be seen simply as virtue or graces. They are processed in flesh and blood! The clergyman finds that whether he wants to or not he is also a front line mental health worker, or he will be so regarded by the specialists in mental health. 

It is on the pastoral role that the psychological discipline has the greatest impact in theological work. The March 1986 American Journal of Psychiatry reported that in recent years pastoral counselors have separated from their parish and emerged as a psychology profession. 

The professionalism process includes a shift away from parish based counseling to counseling centers of medical settings declining interests in religious convictions and practices and increased interests in psychological practices and theories with the changing of fees and increased institution and professional barriers to those individuals perceived as poor counseling clients---or unable to pay... 

There is always a growing deviation from a religious orientation to a pseudo psychiatric orientation. Several States in the US have sought to legislate mandatory licensing of all pastoral counseling, a move which will further consolidate psychologist’s and psychiatrist’s control and influence over religion and clergy.
