Loss of Principles:
Citizens Commission for Human Rights:
Many critics warned of the disintegration of sacred principles. While critics like Herbert Mowrer and Fulton Sheen were, by the 60s, warning of the decay of religious values and social responsibility at the hand of psychology and psychiatry, the spread of mental health influence over religious training and practice continued unabated.
Another example was the Academy of Religion and Mental Health in 1954 with a membership that included, not only clergymen of many faiths, but also psychiatrists and psychologists that outnumbered the clergy 6 to 5. This Academy sponsored programs for clinical psychological training for the clergy! By 1956 the curriculum of Divinity Schools had encompassed even more psychology courses.
The United States National Institute of Mental Health funded 5 year pilot programs for a curriculum incorporating the behavioral sciences into theological education at Loyola University, the Harvard Divinity School and the Yeshiva University. In 1967 a conference sponsored by psychiatry’s National Association for Mental Health (NAMH) in the United Kingdom was devoted to the role of religion in mental health.
The Reverend George Croft, in a lecture in experimental psychology, said that distressed persons were seeking psychotherapists rather than ministers because ministers were not expected to possess psychological insight. Also speaking was Psychiatrist Dr. R.D. Laing, from the Tavistock Institute, who suggested that the clergy get more in touch with the “ego” experience and seminaries and theological colleges should discuss this as a church component.
Dr. Harry Guntrip from the British Psychological Society said that psychotherapy and religious ministers are one in spirit with psychotherapy offering religion factual information to support views of life, based not on authority, but on love. he claimed that religion was wrong to promote mental goodness when it should promote mental health. Today we know that mental illness diminishes moral responsibility.
Reverend Canon Snyder Evans’ summary of the conference made this comment: “Do the words of right and wrong have any usefulness in the light of this new knowledge?” He then suggests that christianity has gotten all mixed up with morality so teaching psychology through theological colleges should be taught across the country.
