Bite #7 Rise of Crime and Drug Abuse:
Citizens Commission for Human rights: (a public service booklet)

In United States the rise of crime has risen 370% since 1960. The rate of reported thefts per 100,000 population increased 200% from 1960 to 1992. The estimated number of adults arrested for the sale of manufacture of drugs nearly tripled between 1980 and 1988. Between 3 and 5% of all children up to 2.8 million are treated with Ritalin. The amphetamine drug is known to cause serious problems including violent and suicidal thoughts and behavior.

Then there are illegal street drugs. More people between the ages of 12 and 17 have tried LSD and other hallucinogens than have tried cocaine and LSD is second to marijuana among this age group, according to US Federal studies. The number of Americans under the control of the Criminal Justice System reached five million in 1994 and may soon equal more than the six million males enrolled in colleges and universities. How desperate have people become? In 1957 four persons per 100,000 killed themselves.

In 1977 the figure was 13 per 100,000 and increased to more than 200% today. Suicide is the second leading cause of death, after accidents, in the age group of 12 to 17. As many as 400,000 suicide attempts are being made yearly. Nor is the rest of the industrial west in better shape. Sweden reportedly had a violent crime rate which rose 445% from 1955 to 1993. Each year in Germany 500,000 prescriptions for psychiatric drugs are given to school children with every seventh psychiatric pill being given to children under the age of eleven!

Between 1985 and 1990 the number of prescriptions for ritalin rose from 1,000 to 16,000. More than 120,000 infants between the age of one and four are given sedatives and hypnotics marking them drug prone before they even reach school age.
