Ted Cruz Introduces Bill to Classify Muslim Brotherhood as Terror Org
A series of two bills being introduced by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz would mark two organizations, including the Egyptian-based Muslim Brotherhood, as terrorist groups, according to a statement released by the senator’s office Tuesday. The bill was notable in that several major individuals and groups in the United States — including top Hillary Clinton adviser Huma Abedin and Muslim advocacy group the Council on American-Islamic Relations — have been tied to the Muslim Brotherhood in one way or another.
According to the statement, the series of bills would also target the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.
“I am proud to reintroduce these bills that would codify needed reforms in America’s war against radical Islamic terrorism,” Sen. Cruz said.
“This potent threat to our civilization has intensified under the Obama administration due to the willful blindness of politically-correct policies that hamper our safety and security. A grand détente with the Muslim Brotherhood and a blind eye to the IRGC are not pathways to peace in this struggle; they guarantee the ultimate success of our enemy.
“It is time to call this enemy by its name and speak with clarity and moral authority,” he added.
A piece in The Hill by Republican congressional candidate Kenneth R. Timmerman from last August detailed Abedin’s ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Most notably, her mother sat on the board of the International Islamic Council for Da’wa and Relief, which is headed by the chief of the Muslim Brotherhood organization.
Now, is Abedin a terrorist? Hardly. Does she have ties to a terrorist organization? Undoubtedly.
Consider this excerpt from a Muslim Brotherhood document discovered by American authorities and included in Cruz’s statement: “The process of settlement is a Civilization-Jihad process…The Ikhwan (Muslim Brotherhood) must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and ‘sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers.”
National Review‘s Andrew McCarthy pointed out that when then-Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota proposed an investigation into Abedin’s Muslim Brotherhood ties back in 2012, she was obstructed by none other than Sen. John McCain, who called them “a few unspecified and unsubstantiated associations.”
The accusations, unfortunately, were neither unspecified nor unsubstantiated. Abedin does have familial ties to the Muslim Brotherhood (as well as a Shariah law journal, the Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, run by her father to “establish a global Shariah in our modern times”).
We certainly don’t know that she’s a part of the Muslim Brotherhood, but there’s also a lot of smoke that simply remains unexplained.
