Some people think the Tea Party exists to expose President Obama’s birth certificate as a forgery. Others say it is to elect more Tea Party representatives to reduce federal spending before the nation’s debt surpasses our ability to service its interest payments, triggering a Greek-like economic collapse.
For others, it’s reducing federal power to spy on our private communications without establishing probable cause. For a great number, it is repealing the president’s dictatorial health care monstrosity that expands the power of a Tea-Party-targeting IRS, ObamaCare’s jackbooted enforcers.
I, on the other hand, have always thought the Tea Party should work to “take back our country” by first taking back our Constitution from the Progressive authoritarians that have expanded the power of Washington well beyond the designs of our Founder’s government of enumerated and limited power.
Now, conservative radio talk-show host Mark Levin has authored a new book, “The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic.”
Levin writes, “I undertook this project not because I believe the Constitution, as originally structured, is outdated and outmoded, thereby requiring modernization through amendments, but because of the opposite – that is, the necessity and urgency of restoring constitutional republicanism and preserving the civil society from the growing authoritarianism of a federal Leviathan. This is not doomsaying or fearmongering but an acknowledgement of fact.”
Levin accurately describes today’s Washington as “a centralized and consolidated government with a ubiquitous network of laws and rules actively suppressing individual initiative, self-interest, and success in the name of the greater good and on behalf of the larger community. Nearly all will be emasculated by it, including the inattentive, ambivalent, and disbelieving.”
And President Obama has issued royal decrees postponing ObamaCare provisions that may arouse the “ambivalent” and “disbelieving” ahead of the 2014-midterm elections.
As I wrote in a column last November:
“America may have already passed the point of no return on fiscal matters, but we can at least slow America’s decline – buying time for a future generation of indentured state surfs to rebuild our once shining city on a hill.
“But that requires a radical shift in Tea Party strategy that plays to its great strengths at the state level: a call for a Constitutional Convention.
“The Constitution’s Article V states, ‘The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution …” However, the document also says that when ‘Legislatures of two thirds of the several States … shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution …’
“In the more than 200-year history of our nation, the states have never availed themselves of the power to amend the document. The organized left has a lock on the Electoral College due to large populations in the bluest of blue states. But the Electoral map broadcast into every home last election eve showed a nation awash in red. That means the real power resides within the nation’s heartland – the red states.”
(read the full column here: http://www.teapartytribune.com/2012/11/12/a-constitutional-convention/).
Although it is important to elect and send Tea Party representatives to Congress, I believe the Tea Party should support and elect state representatives that sign a Tea Party pledge to call for a convention to offer amendments to restore our Constitution to its intended purpose: to limit the power of the national government and thereby maximize individual freedom.
To that end, I strongly urge Tea Party organizers and supporters to watch or record Friday’s Sean Hannity program (9:00 p.m.) on Fox News. Hannity will dedicate the entire hour to Mark Levin’s book and his call for action to save our Constitution from the stranglehold of Progressive “masterminds.”
If you want to save our country, you must first save our Constitution.
