Democrats have continued to search for criminal activity in President Donald Trump’s administration to no avail — but if they want to find corruption and criminal activity, they ought to look at members of their own party.
Texas Democrat refuses to resign from state senate after felony convictions – gets salary and pension
Texas State Sen. Carlos Uresti, a Democrat, was convicted of money laundering and securities fraud in February but is stubbornly insisting on staying in office.
Sen. Uresti was convicted on Feb. 22 of 11 federal counts of money laundering, and wire and securities fraud, Fox News reported. According to prosecutors, the senator and his co-defendant lied to investors to convince them to give them money for a fracking company that went bankrupt in 2015.
Uresti has another court date in May that deals with bribery charges. He is also facing charges for sexual harassment and assault; a reporter told The Daily Beast that Sen. Uresti groped her and “put his tongue down my throat.”
Another woman, Jenn Cervella, said that he ogled her and made her uncomfortable.
“We were being introduced and when we shook hands, he spun me around and said something like, ‘Damn, girl — you’re trouble,’” she said.
He Still Gets Paid
Republican Lt. Gov Dan Patrick has stripped Uresti of all of his assignments, but while Democrat and Republican senators have called on Uresti to resign, he has resisted calls to do so.
Because he is not resigning, Uresti will still receive his pension, which can grow to as high as $140,000 per year — much more than the $7,200 salary that Texas state senators earn while in office.
And every month that Sen. Uresti stays in office that pension grows, and despite his felony convictions he does not have to sacrifice his pension.

The size of a government pension is determined by a legislator’s years served. Since Uresti has served nearly 21 years in the Legislature — combined with potential additions for his four years of active service as a U.S. Marine and other optional service credits — his pension could already be as large as $89,000 per year.
Felons are ineligible to serve in the Texas Legislature, but Uresti can keep his seat while he appeals. If he serves until the end of his current term in January 2021 his pension could grow by more than $9,000.
And that money won’t go away even if Uresti is finally convicted.
A law passed last year renders certain felons ineligible to receive government pensions. But that law isn’t retroactive, meaning it doesn’t apply to crimes committed before June 2017, according to Mary Jane Wardlow, spokeswoman for the Employees Retirement System of Texas.
Hopefully, the Texas legislature will figure out a way to keep this criminal from receiving the benefits of his position. He doesn’t deserve to be paid after what he’s done.
