Individual threatens to assassinate Donald Trump, posts picture of weapon

President Donald Trump has received a barrage of death threats since first declaring his candidacy years ago — including from high-profile activists and comedians — but the most recent comes from what appears to be an ordinary citizen.

A Twitter user posted an image on Wednesday of what some outlets alleged to be an air rifle, and told Trump “You’re next.”

The account has since been suspended.
Twitter User Threatens Donald Trump

Years before the rise of the Internet, presidents would receive death threats via snail mail. Today, however, social media has been the place to go to express desire to see the 45th president dead.

The threat was posted in reply to President Trump’s expression of condolences on the death of Thomas S. Monson. Trump tweeted, “Melania and I are deeply saddened by the death of Thomas S. Monson, a beloved President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints…”

The tweet remained on Twitter for quite a while. As of 5:06 p.m. EST on Wednesday, it had three retweets and 35 likes, but some outlets reported it had over 100 likes by the time it was removed on Thursday morning.

As per Twitter policies, an account will be suspended or deleted for spam, account security at risk, or abusive tweets or behaviors. According to the website:

We may suspend an account if it has been reported to us as violating our Rules surrounding abuse. When an account engages in abusive behavior, like sending threats to others or impersonating other accounts, we may suspend it temporarily or, in some cases, permanently.

But, as many conservatives have pointed out in recent years, the management is quite selective as to who gets suspended and who gets ignored.
Twitter Filled with Trump Death Threats

Social media has created a headache for the Secret Service. In 2016, Mashable reported that the president received 12,000 assassination tweets in just 12 days following Inauguration Day.

Some of these tweets required investigation by the Secret Service, while some merely prompted Twitter to take action. However, for the most part, these tweets are left on the website, ignored by staff or simply deleted by the user.

Although a majority of the death threats are posted by average citizens trying to seek attention or gain a following, some prominent individuals have gotten in on the action. In April 2017, Malcolm Nance, a counterterrorism analyst for MSNBC and retired U.S. Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer in naval cryptology, deleted a tweet that called for ISIS to bomb Trump Towers in Istanbul. Nothing happened.

In March 2016, Jonathan Chait, a New York Magazine writer and liberal commentator, tweeted, “Will simply offer $100 million bounty for Donald Trump, dead or alive.”

Rupert Myers, a former British correspondent for GQ Magazine, tweetedin January 2017, “Could Obama murder Trump and Pence, then Pardon himself? Asking for humanity.”
Reining In Hate Speech

Twitter claims that it wants to rein in hate speech and violent rhetoric, but the “Death to Trump” tweets keep coming, often with little or no action.

Two pro-assassination tweets from Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day remain on the site even now.

While many of these social media posts may not represent legitimate assassination plans, threats against a sitting president should not be taken lightly. So much for leftist tolerance.
