The investigation into Hillary Clinton’s unauthorized email server has revealed countless side scandals in the Clinton political machine. The latest bombshell subplot to emerge provides details of the meeting between former President Bill Clinton and then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch on a Phoenix airport tarmac — just days before Hillary was cleared of any wrongdoing in the email probe.
Report: 30 ‘hidden’ Clinton-Lynch documents to be released
Although the FBI originally determined that there were no files related to the tarmac meeting, now — more than a year later — the federal agency suddenly discovered that 30 pages of “potentially responsive documents may exist.” And they’re finally about to hand them over.
After first denying the existence of any documents related to the inappropriate Clinton/Lynch rendezvous, the FBI finally admitted in October that they found 30 pages of documents detailing the meeting, according to Judicial Watch. The FBI wanted six weeks to release the documents, and had until November 30 to hand them over as ordered in a FOIA lawsuit.
In anticipation, Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton tweeted:
FBI Hid Clinton/Lynch Tarmac Meeting Records. But the cover-up begins to end -- thanks to @JudicialWatch -- the day after tomorrow. @RealDonaldTrump needs to clean house at FBI/DOJ. youtu.be/zvlGh_lDCyg
Fitton believes that the FBI’s sudden “discovery” is further proof of their desire to obscure the truth and obstruct any internal investigation of their conduct.
In an email to Fox News in October, Fitton wrote:
We presume they are new documents. We won’t know what’s in them until we see them, unfortunately. The fact they just “found” them is yet another scandal.
Scandal within a scandal
Republicans were outraged in the summer of 2016 when the head of the Department of Justice (DOJ) met with the husband of an investigative subject in the privacy of Lynch’s airplane. Former FBI Director James Comey even called the clandestine exchange problematic and stated that it was a “deciding factor” in his decision to independently announce that no charges would be filed against Clinton.
The FBI initially responded to the June 30, 2016 FOIA request by claiming that no records related to the tarmac meeting exist. However, a similar request from the American Center for Law and Justice uncovered emails showing that Lynch used an email alias in secret correspondences with DOJ staffers discussing the tarmac meeting, and other emails demonstrated that the FBI and DOJ were actively discussing how to handle the fallout from the Phoenix meeting.
As a result, the FBI sent a letter on Aug. 10 to Judicial Watch advising them that the status of their FIOA request had changed. FBI Section Chief David Hardy wrote, “Upon further review, we subsequently determined potentially responsive documents may exist. As a result, your [FOIA] request has been reopened.”
Calls for a special counsel
This was not the only time that the FBI and DOJ have acted suspiciously regarding their own investigation into Hillary Clinton’s unauthorized server. Comey previously testified that Lynch asked him to refer to the email probe as a “matter” and not an “investigation.”
Nor is this the only instance that the FBI has been reluctant to provide evidence related to the tarmac meeting. In another related request from Judicial Watch asking for the Obama administration’s internal talking points surrounding the Lynch/Clinton meeting, the DOJ responded by releasing 417 “heavily redacted” pages that failed to answer key questions about how the White House chose to handle the fallout from the inappropriate conference in Phoenix.
Fitton was understandably dismayed that Donald Trump’s DOJ would maintain the secrecy behind a potential cover-up from his predecessor:
It is jaw-dropping that the Trump administration is blacking out key information about how the Obama Justice Department tried to spin Loretta Lynch’s scandalous meeting with Bill Clinton. As a result of the persistent diversions and obstruction from the FBI and DOJ, Congressional Republicans are demanding answers; conservatives on the House Judicial Committee have asked for the appointment of a special counsel to examine how Comey and Lynch handled the email investigation.
The FBI’s spontaneous “discovery” of once nonexistent documents related to the infamous tarmac exchange is likely to fuel further calls to reopen the case and examine the impartiality of the investigators.
