Largest Fraud Scheme In Armed Forces History Navy Breaks WIDE Open, Navy Commander Gets The Worst Surprise In His Career
One of the first things you learn about espionage during basic training in the military, is written on a small business card.
Every recruit is told that if you’re ever asked to do something by a foreign national, authority figure, or liaison from an organization or group, your automatic response should be “no” and he/she should immediately report it to their superior officer.
What soldiers are taught in the military is that all man and woman are different. Each of them has their own different “triggers” that will work on the individuals. Such triggers are money, gifts, and sex.
The foreigner would maneuver the target with ether alcohol or drugs and try and befriend him/her. After a few weeks have passed they’d ask for some simple favor. Something like, a copy of a phone list at the base, or something more complicated like information about military operations.
And once the person falls into the trap It’s a vicious cycle of constantly repaying favors that become more and more dangerous.
The Target is continually bribed with money, gifts, or sex or a combination of those things. And if at any time the target refuses to cooperate, hell is let loose upon them. They are threatened with photos or videos, incriminating them about cooperating with a foreign power. The target from that point onward can either refuse and go to jail, or continue living on the hook.
Fat Leonard, a contractor in the US Navy has managed to “hook” 21 Navy officials. Two of them were admirals, one of whom recently received the largest penalty of any Naval officer. This is the US Navy Commander Bobby Pitts.
From Daily Caller we have reports that the U.S. Navy Cmdr. Bobby Pitts was sentenced on Friday to 18 months in jail for his role in the largest fraud scheme to ever plague the service. The U.S. District Judge Janis Sammartino said to Pitts that he had “betrayed the Navy and betrayed the country,” according to the the Associated Press.
U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman says that “Pitts deliberately and methodically undermined government operations and in doing so, diverted his allegiance from his country and colleagues to a foreign defense contractor, and for that, he is paying a high price,”
According to the Daily Caller the fraud scheme was perpetrated by the Singapore-based defense contractor Leonard Francis which involved numerous high-ranking Navy officials handing him favors in exchange for bribes like cash, prostitutes, Cuban cigars and wild parties.
This scheme allowed him to overcharge on the services he provided which was mainly to supply fuel and food, among other things. Pitt’s sentence was the last one to be handed down.
He pleaded guilty to sending internal information to Francis that indicated he was being investigated for his work in government contracting. His penalty also includes that Pitts will have to pay $15,000 in fines to the government and $7,500 in restitution. The Department of Justice estimated that Francis had cost the Navy 35 million dollars.
Up to this point in the case the government has charged 28 people, two of whom are admirals, in addition to 19 other Navy officials.
After hearing a news like this, one would wonder about the readiness of the whole unit of such a commander . Even though the evidence proves that Pitts was guilty in this case it’s questionable how having such a leader has affected the rest of his command.
What we are left with, is to hope that this was merely an isolated incident and doesn’t affect the whole Navy.
