When you are in the cemetery business, it’s quite natural to check out other cemeteries when you are visiting out of town. We recently had the opportunity to tour Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, California, near Palm Springs.
Of the communities that make up Coachella Valley, Cathedral City is among the least glitzy – Palm Springs (especially the movie colony area), Rancho Mirage, and Indian Hills all have more of an ultra, gated-and-guarded feel. But, Cathedral City is very authentic: it definitely has the desert atmosphere people expect.
Desert Memorial Park, which sits hard by the desert itself, is an understated oasis. There are numerous notable interments and the grounds of the cemetery reflect a kind of classic, almost historical ambiance.
Opening in 1956, it is expertly maintained. The graves are primarily flat stones, which makes for easy mowing and convenient landscaping.
Graves are laid out on a grid so that there is an orderly, easy to locate convenience that many cemeteries lack.
As we mentioned, notable interments abound: Sonny Bono, Magda and Jo Lee Gabor, Earl Hagen, Betty Hutton, Busby Berkeley, Frederick Loewe, William Powell, and Eddy Howard rest comfortably in this serene, unpretentious setting.
The most famous occupants bare the last name of Sinatra – Frank, his wife Barbara, and his parents Anthony and Dolly are located close together. Also nearby are famed composer Jimmy Van Heusen and Frank’s colorfully named best friend, Jilly Rizzo.
This is not to say that the cemetery is anything like a Forest Lawn or Hollywood Forever Cemetery, i.e., devoted to the celebrated.
Desert Memorial is primarily made up of locals who treated much like any other cemetery. In fact, on Thanksgiving Day weekend there were a number of families spending Sunday afternoon visiting their loved ones; this same practice takes place here at Martin Oaks in Lewisville, Texas.
The surprising quality of the cemetery was the amount of attention paid to Frank's Sinatra’s grave. You might believe that since he passed away in 1998, he may have faded slightly from public memory. We were told by those who work at the cemetery that such is not the case at all. On Thanksgiving weekend, tributes were bountiful on his marker: partially empty bottles of Jack Daniels, coins, and a full array of flowers.
In the course of researching this blog, it was interesting to remember the way his funeral and burial were conducted.
Sinatra passed away on May 14th, 1998 of a heart attack. The funeral mass was held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Beverly Hills, California; there were over 400 who were invited into the sacristy, but more than 1,000 fans and a large knot of reporters were outside of the church. A skywriter put a sentimental F.S. with a heart in skies over head.
Sinatra songs, which were played, mostly by his long time pianist Bill Miller, included “In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning,” “One For My Baby, One For The Road,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” and others. The final Sinatra number was his long time theme, “Put Your Dreams Away.” “Ave Maria” was also performed.
Following the service, the family, in a private plane, flew from Los Angeles to Palm Springs for the final interment.
It is reported that the air traffic controller, when clearing Sinatra’s jet for landing, said “Welcome home, Mr. Sinatra.”
In closing, let us mention that during the funeral service it was mentioned that Frank Sinatra’s two favorite words were “Jack” and “Daniels;” his least two favorite words were “Take Two.” The latter refers to the number of takes he preferred on a movie set – in the recording studio, however, Sinatra had no problems with multiple takes to achieve the perfection some of his vocals reflect.
Desert Memorial Park is a fitting place for both the famous and the not so famous to call their final resting place.
