Leading up to the weekend, Democrats were clamoring that Al Franken needs to step down due to claims from Leeann Tweeden that he sexually assaulted and harassed her. As a result of the claim, progressives are telling Franken that he needs to step down. Democrats went as far as to find a replacement for Franken in Minnesota — Democrat, Rep. Keith Ellison, according to The Washington Times.
In the photo, Franken is staring into the camera with a creepy grin, and is mimicking the action of groping Tweeden’s breasts, all while she slept on the way home from a 2006 USO tour.
“Franken must go. We do not tolerate those who abuse their power,” said Justice Democrats PAC executive director Saikat Chakrabarti in an official statement. “Representative Keith Ellison has a proven track record of integrity and fighting for progressive principles.”
Both Democrats and Republicans are calling for Franken to give up his seat due to his misconduct. He admitted that he did not remember the sexual assault. Franken did, however, write a scene for a skit where he and Tweeden kissed — Franken then forced her to practice, and finally shoved his tongue in her mouth, according to Tweeden.
Minnesota state auditor Rebecca Otto, who is currently running for governor, also said that Franken needs to step down. “Al Franken is my friend, but we can’t have a double standard,” she said.
The president of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, Megan Thomas, had similar sentiments. “No one should fear their elected representatives, so, sadly, for me, I think the Senator should resign,” Thomas said on Facebook.
National leaders in the Democrat party such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Patty Murray of Washington both said that Franken’s behavior was unacceptable, but never directly called for him to resign from his position.
If Franken does step down, and it is looking likely, he will be replaced by Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton. He would take Franken’s spot on an “interim basis” until the 2018 election, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The double standard expected by Democrats has been blown out of the water. Even Feminist groups are calling for Franken to step aside for committing such disgusting acts to a woman.
