The NFL is starting to see what big trouble they are actually in. The protests have taken a huge chunk of revenue from the league as more and more fans decide that it is not worth the trouble. There is simply no excuse for what is going on right now. Fans have been clear that they do not agree with what is currently going on. And yet, the NFL continues to side with the players.
But as it turns out, the NFL might be in more trouble than we had originally thought. It has been reported that the NFL receives around $1 billion in subsidies every single year. As a non-profit organization, they are able to get this money. Most people might think that this is a business. But this could not be further from the truth.
The IRS tax law clearly explains that it is definitely okay for the NFL to encourage fans to vote, their behavior cannot turn into favoring or encouraging their fan base to go against or for a specific candidate at any point. That means that what they are currently doing is against the law.
It is doubtful that anything will come out of this, but it does prove the point that they are in the wrong here. The IRS website explains “… voter education or registration activities with evidence of bias that (a) would favor one candidate over another; (b) oppose a candidate in some manner; or (c) have the effect of favoring a candidate or group of candidates, will constitute prohibited participation or intervention.”

Sunday in American host, Tom Basile, talked about what is going on with the NFL.
“Roger Goodell and team owners are playing with fire. In an effort to pander to their own players’ politics, they’re insulting a broad cross-section of Americans who are sick of the politicization of everything. But perhaps more damaging for the NFL is that fact that they risk exposing a tax scheme that will further enrage fans and potentially jeopardize their entire business model. The last thing Goodell wants is people talking about the NFL’s tax-exempt status and taxpayer subsidies.”What do you think about the subsidies that the NFL receives?
