Democrats to Hillary: Step aside
Democrats insist that Hillary Clinton stay out of the spotlight in the wake of her continued narrative regarding her “unfair” loss in the 2016 presidential election, and her recent blaming of the Democratic National Committee for the defeat.
More than a dozen Democrats—including strong supporters of Clinton and former aides—were interviewed by The Hill and claimed that Clinton’s defensive appearances are seen as critical of President Obama, are damaging the party, and that they make Clinton appear bitter.
According to The Hill report by Amie Parnes, the Democrats interviewed said they “understood the need for Clinton to explain what happened in the election, and many also empathized with Clinton’s anger over former FBI Director James Comey’s handling of a probe into her private email server. But they also unanimously said Clinton needs to rethink her public blaming tour.”
After watching Clinton in her appearance at the Recode Conference in California on Wednesday, one longtime aide said, “Good God, what is she doing? She’s apparently still really, really angry. I mean, we all are. The election was stolen from her and that’s how she feels.
“But to go out there publicly again and again and talk about it? And then blame the DNC?” the aide said. “It’s not helpful to Democrats. It’s not helpful to the country and I don’t think it’s helpful to her.”
During her appearance at the Recode Conference, Clinton also contended that she had inherited nothing from a “bankrupt” Democratic Party led by Obama for eight years.
“If she is trying to come across as the leader of the angry movement of what happened in 2016, then she’s achieving it,” a former senior aide to Obama said. “But part of the problem she had was she didn’t have a vision for the Democratic Party and she needs to now take a break and let others come to the forefront.”
Jamal Simmons, a Democratic strategist, commented on the frustration among Democrats over Clinton’s statements.
“Some people I know are just frustrated that it’s happening,” he said. “She is a national hero and a great public servant and has the right to be upset.”
Simmons added that, if Clinton is going to address her defeat, “it would be nice to hear a little more about the things she did wrong, which I believe mattered more than what she has discussed.”
If former Bill Clinton adviser Dick Morris is correct, Democrats will be upset when Hillary runs for president in 2020. According to recent commentary by Morris, that is Clinton’s plan.
