 Citizens Commission for Human Rights:

Psychologist Lewin’s Purpose for the National Team Laboratory was to study the effects of “freedom and domination” with the view of socially engineering a more democratic social order. He had worked for the United States Office of Strategic Services (OSS) the forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the early forties.

The OSS was involved with the psychological attack against the moral and spiritual defenses of a nation during modern warfare. Sensitivity Training was later described as having been developed to study how people could be socially and psychologically manipulated to give up their souls---. Adherent, such as Psychologist Ed Schein, who studied brain washing techniques in Korea, admitted the study derives from Pavlov’s brain washing techniques.

In an introduction to one of his papers on Sensitivity Training, Schein and his co editor Irving Weschler, write that this method fits into a context of institutional influential procedures which includes coercive persuasion in the form of thought reform or brain washing, as well as a multitude of less coercive informal patterns. It was defined as a three stage process involving, freezing. unfreezing, and refreezing.

Unfreezing physically removes the person from his accustomed routines, sources, or information and social relationships. Then undermining the normal social support structures humiliates the individual so as to see his old self as unworthy and supposedly motivates him to change. This process was later compared to those methods employed by the Chinese Communists in their attempt to plant in the mind the communist attitudes into their youth or their prisoners.

Changing is defined as “directing the person toward new attitudes” quite often through forcefulness. Refreezing was defined as “the integration of the changed attitudes into the rest of their personality.
