On Tuesday May 7th, my hometown newspaper, “The Pasadena Star News” repeated the charges against me in a story on the front page of its Local News section. The headlines read: “14 year old tapes Spark Controversy!”
The story revealed the groups that were apparently behind the attack against me. The paper described the “Women’s Civil rights and Gay and Lesbian Groups as being concerned about the tapes. Joe Hicks, a spokesman for the American Civil Liberties Union, (ACLU) was quoted as saying, “It indicates setting a moral tone in the Police Department that is certainly unhealthy.
” The story stated: “The activist groups, some of which, have already called for the resignation of Vernon and LAPD Chief Daryl Gates, said they wanted to know if Vernon still holds these beliefs? The story went on to quote Joe Hicks: “If he doesn’t believe that then he should come forward and that will be the end of it!”
In other words, he wanted me to change my religious beliefs. The article continued...”Dave Smith, spokesman for the Los Angeles Community Service Center said Gay and Lesbian activists were urging the ouster of Gates and Vernon before the beating of Rodney King.
We know of these tapes where he (Vernon) has made several remarks that were derogatory to the gay and lesbian community. We want him out because he is an admitted unapologetic homophobian.” Significantly, neither of those stories made any allegation of wrongful action on my part. No acts of misconduct were even applied.
