Allegiance to the Constitution....

What is the purpose of government? The Declaration of Independence answers this question. The government does NOT grant us our rights. Our rights come from God. The purpose of government is to protect our rights. This is from our Declaration of Independence:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed..."

I cringe every time I hear the term "Constitutional Rights." It would be more accurate to call them Constitutional restrictions. The 2nd Amendment, for example, DOES NOT grant the people the right to keep and bear arms. The right of self defense is not a "Constitutional right." The Constitution affirms that the right is a God given right, a natural right. The right precedes the Constitution and all governments. No government gave the people this right and no government can take it away. It is the birthright of every human being. It is an inalienable right that cannot be surrendered, transferred or stolen. The right of self defense is utterly beyond the reach of government.

James Madison was opposed to including the Bill of Rights in the Constitution because he felt they were unnecessary. The Constitution limits to federal government to its enumerated powers (We know how that worked out). Madison was also concerned that listing a few rights might lead some to believe that these were our only rights or worse that these rights were granted to us by the Constitution (We are seeing how this is playing out).

Our rights don't come from the government. The purpose of the 2nd Amendment is not to grant the people's rights, but to restrict the government from infringing upon the people's God given rights. Any government that infringes on the right of self defense becomes illegitimate and should be resisted. Here is another section in the Declaration of Independence:

"when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right <of the people>, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."

If our government infringes on our right of self-defense, then it will be doing violence to God, to the Constitution and to the people. It will be our duty to resist.

The Declaration of Independence goes on to say:
"We, therefore, <appeal> to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown."

If our federal government continues its usurpations of our freedoms, and there is no indication that it will not, then the day will soon come when we will have to bear the burden and duty of absolving our allegiance to the federal government and to renew our declaration of independence from tyranny 
and allegiance to the Constitution.
