McGuffey Reader, William McGuffey

In 1836 William McGuffey published the first edition of the McGuffey Reader: 

Between 1836 and 1920 more than 122 million copies were sold. Millions of American children learned to read and write from that reader. In the forward of the book McGuffey wrote: “The christian religion is the religion of our country. From it are derived our prevalent notions of the character of God, the Great Moral Governor of the Universe. Our doctrines are founded on christianity and are peculiarities of our free institutions.
