UK Prime Minister David Cameron launched a campaign last week to allow “local authorities, social workers or police to apply directly to courts” if and when they suspect that a Muslim is planning to take a young girl abroad for female genital mutilation (FGM).
This means the suspect would have to immediately surrender his or her passport and travel documents. Furthermore, if the suspect were to disobey this order, he or she would face up to five years in prison.
The prime minister made this bold move against radical Muslims after a recently released report revealed that 578 innocent young girls were treated for FGM in England in March alone. Even worse, at least 60 of these girls were underage.
According to reports, young girls are being taken to Muslim countries to receive FGM so as to reduce their libido and thus reduce the chances of them losing their virginity before marriage. It’s a sick Islamic practice used by Muslims to control young women.
Furthermore, the World Health Organization estimates that anywhere from 100 to 140 million women globally have undergone FGM.
Though FGM has been banned in the UK since 1985, there unfortunately has “still been no successful prosecution” of any Muslim perpetrators.
Cameron hopes that his new campaign helps change this.
“The message needs to be given through prosecutions that this is not acceptable,” he said.
According to The Guardian, Cameron described FGM as “a cruel and barbaric practice” that must be stopped immediately.
“These new orders will help in the fight against this horrific abuse,” he told reporters.
