The usual suspects talk a lot about privilege in America: white privilege or male privilege. It makes for a good catchphrase for their community organizers and social justice warriors. They can accuse anyone of anything they like, because male or white privilege. Yay!
But everybody else in America knows that you'd better watch what you say, in public or in private. Say the wrong thing, and you could lose your job, unless you are a liberal.
We have had a couple of examples in the last couple of weeks. Nobel Prize Laureate Sir Tim Hunt made an injudicious remark about women in science, and was forced to resign his remaining honorary positions. Gone in a couple of days, in Britain as in America.
At least Sir Tim lost his jobs over nothing. Larry Summers lost his job at Harvard for daring to tell truth to power about the science on women in science.
Over at liberal SF publisher Tor Books, the Associate Publisher and Creative Director Irene Gallo made comments about the Sad and Rabid Puppies in a personal Facebook post, saying they were “unrepentantly racist, sexist and homophobic” and she still has her job.
Notice the basic difference. Sir Tim was making a clumsy joke; he loses his sinecures. Irene Gallo makes a cruel accusation, that she probably believes with her bigoted heart, and she still has her job, for her employer is so understanding.
There is only one kind of privilege in America. Are you a liberal? Don't worry too much about ill-considered hate speech towards people you don't like. Liberals will have your back. But the rest of you sheeple? Better watch your mouth, pal.
Jonah Goldberg chalks it all up to the liberal chestnut that the “personal is political,” and he's right.
When everything is considered political, the totality of life is politicized. And that’s just a clunky way of describing totalitarianism.Liberals don't get it because they don't get that their politics is a secular religion. But politics combined with progressivism is totalitarianism.
So they don't understand that their catchphrases about the personal and the political amount to total religious and political control of all life.
And who gets hurt the worst? It's the kids, because they know nothing except what they are taught by their totalitarian teachers. R.K. Modena tells us how that works in a recent post that touched on her father's service in East Germany as Filipino Ambassador. The East German adults knew a time before socialism, so they would discreetly ask about things out in the world. But the kids were mind-numbed robots. Modena writes about a young woman smuggled out of East Germany into West Berlin.
[This young woman] was struck dumb for three days from sheer culture shock after she saw West Berlin for the first time – and realized that everything she’d been raised to believe, and had known as truth was in fact a carefully manufactured and maintained lie that was possible only through total control of information. How much of what our own young people are taught about the world in their government child custodial facilities is “a carefully manufactured and maintained lie?” How about this lie, from a theater director introducing a modern Much Ado About Nothing to the liberal ladies in Ashland, Oregon, in 2015?
Our production reflects a modern world, a world filled with war, with inequalities based on gender, race and class, and where language is simultaneously powerful and fallible. In a society so imperfect, so steeped in the tradition of the necessity to fight for power, what does it mean to love.Get a clue, director Lineana Blain-Cruz. For a world really filled with war you are talking about the hunter-gatherers. For serious inequalities you could try the feudal era. For the “necessity” of the “fight for power” you are talking about the manufactured reality in lefty fantasyland.
Suppose you are a young theater director and everything you have been taught about the “modern world” is a “carefully manufactured and maintained lie?” How many days of being “struck dumb” would it take for you to transition into the real world?
The problem for conservatives is that we do not solve the problem by playing the liberal game and trying to name and shame liberal theater directors for their social justice warrior follies. We just want a world where ordinary people can be as stupid as rising liberal theater directors and bigoted liberal publishers and still keep their jobs.
We just want ordinary people – and even Nobel laureates – to enjoy the privilege to be as stupid and bigoted as our modern privileged liberal aristocracy, the liberal publishers and the liberal theater directors.
We want an America where it is no longer true that the only privilege is liberal privilege.
