Sen. Ted Cruz On The Move

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, questions Ashton Carter at his Armed Services committee confirmation hearing to replace Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel as Pentagon chief on Feb. 4. At center is Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Ted Cruz is heading to Germany this weekend for an international security conference, along with House Armed Services Chairman Mac Thornberry, R-Clarendon.
Senate Armed Services Chairman John McCain is leading the congressional delegation, which includes 10 senators and five House members. Four of the senators and two of the congressmen are Democrats.
Cruz aides said the senator will engage in important discussions about security challenges facing the United States. Unsaid: this sort of thing also helps an aspiring presidential candidate to bone up, look serious and score points.
Cruz is keeping a busy political schedule, too. He just accepted a March 15 speaking gig in New Hampshire, keynoting a dinner for the Grafton County GOP. He was in Iowa two weeks ago, and he’ll be back March 7 for the first Iowa Agriculture Summit, along with former Gov. Rick Perry and a number of other likely candidates. That summit will mark Jeb Bush’s first visit to Iowa since declaring in December that he may run.
“We are in a moment of global crisis. ISIS is burning people alive, the Iranians are pursuing a nuclear weapon and Putin is redrawing the map of Europe in a way that hasn’t been seen since the end of World War II,” Cruz said in a statement announcing his participation in the Munich trip. “All while this administration seems more focused on de-stabilizing the government of one of our closest allies than confronting any of these challenges,” Cruz said, referring to strains in the U.S.-Israel relationship.
He called the conference a “a unique opportunity to hear the perspective of various world leaders on these issues, and gain valuable insight on how the United States might help offset the disastrous policy decisions being made by our current administration.”
More information about the conference and live-stream video of panels and speeches can be found here.
Vice President Joe Biden will speak at the conference about European and global security challenges. White House officials say he’ll meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to discuss Russian aggression in Ukraine.
