Allen West Calls for Specific Massive Move
Against Obama…
Against Obama…
Allen West is one of America’s most outspoken
conservatives.
The much-loved Republican is now throwing his
weight behind a massive initiative that could
end Obama’s constitutional overreach.
In a post on his website, the former
representative from Florida discussed his
support for a plan that could return America to
the vision the Founding Fathers had for it.
The post is titled, “It’s time for a Convention
of States, particularly since Congress doesn’t
think so.”
For the uninitiated, the “Convention of States”
initiative is a campaign to invoke Article V of
the Constitution, whereby two-thirds of the
individual states can request a constitutional
convention, at which new amendments can be
proposed.
While the requisite three-fourths of the
individual states are still needed for the
amendment(s) to become fixed in the
Constitution, Article V allows the nation to
bypass Congress entirely in proposing
amendments.
Such a convention has been proposed by many as a
way to curb the excesses of the federal
government – especially those of President
Obama, who seems to have set a personal goal to
violate at least one constitutional article or
amendment for each day of the week.
“You’ve probably heard this story before,” West
began.
“Following the Constitutional Convention in
September 1787, Elizabeth Powel, the premiere
‘Saloniste of Philadelphia’ approached Benjamin
Franklin on his way out of the Pennsylvania
State House and asked what form of government
the delegates of the Congress had agreed upon.
He replied, ‘A republic, madam, if you can keep
it.'”
Needless to say, West feels we haven’t been all
that adept at keeping it as of late.
He proposes Article V as the antidote, in spite
of – or rather, because of – congressional
disapproval of the plan.
“Now of course the crowd inside the beltway will
portray these patriotic and concerned Americans
as ‘right-wing extremists,'” West writes, “but
if seeking to implement procedures the Founding
Fathers bequeathed is extreme, then what is the
future of our Constitutional Republic?”
West’s move comes as the Article V movement has
been picking up steam.
The concept had first only received serious
consideration on the AM radio dial.
However, more mainstream politicians have signed
on to it as of late, including Gov. Bobby Jindal
of Louisiana, Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and
former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Three states have officially voted to endorse
such a convention – Alaska, Florida and Georgia.
In addition, West notes, the Assembly of State
Legislatures (ASL) is meeting at the Naval
Heritage Center in Washington to discuss
possible rules for an Article V convention.
